Where There Is a Wheel

P. Sainath's report on how cycling became a social movement for neo-literate rural women in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. Encouraged by the Arivoli literacy movement and the district collector Sheela Rani Chunkath, over 100,000 women learnt cycling and gained mobility, income, confidence and, above all, self-respect.
