Epithelial tissue forms the protective covering of the body and the inner lining of organs, tubes, and cavities. Think of epithelium as the body's “surface + lining sheet”.

Where is it found?

  • Outer surface: skin
  • Inner lining: mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestine, trachea, urinary bladder
  • Covers organs: liver surface, kidneys surface
  • Forms glands: sweat glands, salivary glands, thyroid, etc.

(A) Cells are tightly packed

  • Cells are very close to each other.
  • Intercellular space is minimal, and there is very little matrix.

(B) Basement membrane (very important concept)

  • Every epithelium rests on a thin, supportive sheet called the basement membrane.
  • It attaches epithelium to connective tissue below.
  • Helps in support, filtration (kidney), and regeneration.

(C) Avascular but nourished

  • Epithelium has no blood vessels.
  • It gets nutrition by diffusion from the connective tissue below.

(D) Polarity

  • Epithelial cells have:
  • Apical surface (towards lumen/outside)
  • Basal surface (towards basement membrane)
  • This polarity helps in functions like absorption and secretion.

(E) Regeneration

  • Epithelial cells divide frequently → heals quickly.
  • Example: mouth lining heals faster than muscle.

(A) Simple Epithelium (Single Layer)

Best for exchange, absorption, secretion because substances can pass easily.

1. Simple Squamous Epithelium

  • Flat, tile-like cells.
  • Works like a thin membrane.

5. Glandular Epithelium

  • Main function: Protection from wear and tear.

Stratified Squamous Epithelium
