From Tissues to Organs

In multicellular animals, no single tissue can do all the work alone. So, the four basic tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular, neural) combine in fixed patterns to form an organ.

Organ (Definition): An organ is a body part made of two or more different tissues that work together to perform a specific complex function.

Because many body functions are too complex for one tissue type. For example:

  • Digestion needs secretion + movement + absorption + control.
  • Pumping blood needs strong rhythmic contraction + coordination + valves + lining.

  • Forms valves and supportive framework.
  • Blood flowing inside is also a fluid connective tissue.

Organ System (Definition): When two or more organs cooperate and interact to perform a major body function, they form an organ system.

Key point:

  • An organ does a specialized job.
  • An organ system does a complete life function needed by the body.

  • Mouth & salivary glands: start digestion (starch)
