Quick Recap — Degrees of Freedom & Specific Heats

  • Degrees of freedom ff: monatomic 3 (translational); diatomic 5 (3 trans + 2 rot); at high TT vibrational modes add.
  • Equipartition: each degree of freedom contributes 12kBT\dfrac12 k_BT per molecule, so internal energy U=f2nRTU=\dfrac{f}{2}nRT.
  • Molar specific heats: CV=f2RC_V=\dfrac{f}{2}R, CP=CV+RC_P=C_V+R, and γ=CPCV=1+2f\gamma=\dfrac{C_P}{C_V}=1+\dfrac{2}{f}. So monatomic γ=53\gamma=\tfrac53, diatomic γ=75\gamma=\tfrac75.
  • Mean free path: λ=12πd2nTP\lambda=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt2\,\pi d^2 n}\propto\dfrac{T}{P} — it grows at low pressure (fewer molecules per volume).

Worked mini-example. A diatomic gas has f=5f=5: CV=52RC_V=\tfrac52 R, CP=72RC_P=\tfrac72 R, and γ=1+25=75=1.4\gamma=1+\dfrac25=\dfrac75=1.4.
