The Appendicular Skeleton
If the Axial skeleton is the trunk of a tree, the Appendicular skeleton represents the branches. It consists of exactly 126 bones, making up your limbs (arms and legs) and the girdles (shoulder and hip) that attach them to the body's core.
Bones of the Forelimb (The Arm & Hand)
Each arm is built perfectly for grasping and carrying, containing exactly 30 bones.
- Upper Arm: Humerus (1 bone).
- Forearm: Radius (thumb side) and Ulna (pinky side) (2 bones).
- Wrist: Carpals (8 tiny bones).
- Palm: Metacarpals (5 bones).
- Fingers (Digits): Phalanges (14 bones).
- Formula: 2 in the thumb, 3 in every other finger (2, 3, 3, 3, 3).

Bones of the Hindlimb (The Leg & Foot)
Each leg is built for bearing weight and moving, also containing exactly 30 bones.

- Knee: Patella (1 bone). Also known as the knee cap. It is a cup-shaped bone covering the knee joint ventrally (from the front).
- Shank (Lower Leg): Tibia (the thicker shin bone) and Fibula (the thinner calf bone) (2 bones).
- Ankle: Tarsals (7 bones). Wait, why 7 when the wrist had 8? Because the Patella took up one spot!

The Girdles: The Connectors
Girdles are the joints or brackets that attach your limbs to the axial skeleton.
A. Pectoral Girdle (The Shoulder)
This attaches your arm to your chest. Each shoulder consists of two bones:
- Clavicle (Collar Bone): A long, slender bone with two curves. You can easily feel it at the base of your neck.
- Scapula (Shoulder Blade): A large, flat, triangular bone located on the upper back (dorsal thorax).
- Location: It sits exactly between the second and seventh ribs.
- Spine & Acromion: It has a ridge on the back called the spine, which ends in an expanded, flat process called the Acromion. The clavicle attaches to this Acromion.
- The Socket (Glenoid Cavity): Just below the Acromion is a depression called the Glenoid cavity. The round head of the Humerus fits perfectly in here to form the shoulder joint.
B. Pelvic Girdle (The Hip)
This attaches your legs to your spine. It is built for massive weight-bearing.
- The Halves: It consists of two big halves called Coxal bones.
- The Fusion: Each Coxal bone is actually formed by three smaller bones fused tightly together: the Ilium, Ischium, and Pubis.
- The Socket (Acetabulum): Right where these three bones fuse, there is a deep cup-like cavity called the Acetabulum. The ball-like head of the Femur fits in here to form the hip joint.
- The Meeting Point (Pubic Symphysis): The two Coxal bones curve around to the front (ventrally) and meet at a joint called the Pubic Symphysis, which is held together by tough fibrous cartilage.

- The 30/30 Rule: Both one arm and one leg have exactly 30 bones.
- Wrist vs. Ankle Math: The wrist has 8 Carpals, but the ankle only has 7 Tarsals. Why? Because the leg has the Patella (kneecap) making up the difference!
