Same Syllabus. A Different Exam.
The Solved Examples section worked this chapter the way a textbook does - define, explain, illustrate. NEET does not ask you to explain anything. It hands you one line, four options and about half a minute, and it wants the right one.
So this section covers the same syllabus with a different question in mind: not "do you understand this?" but "can you recognise it instantly and eliminate the other three?"
The marking is what forces the change. A correct answer is +4 and a wrong one is -1, so a guess you are not confident about costs you a mark and, worse, costs you the time you spent on it. The Living World is the cheapest scoring chapter in the whole Biology paper - short, factual, no reasoning - and the only way to waste it is to let one of its questions run long.
Key Point: Every question from this chapter is a recall question wearing one of three costumes. There is nothing here to work out. If you find yourself thinking, you have already lost the time this chapter was supposed to save you.

The three costumes, and what each should cost you

The numbers. 1.7 - 1.8 million species have been described so far. Linnaeus wrote Systema Naturae.
The codes, and the trap in them. ICBN is the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature and governs plants. ICZN is the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and governs animals. The distractor swaps them, and it also swaps for and of - ICBN is "for Botanical", ICZN is "of Zoological".
[NEET Important] The single most-set item in this chapter is taxonomy against systematics. Taxonomy is the four processes; systematics is broader, because it adds evolutionary relationships. If an option says systematics is a part of taxonomy, it is inverted.
The Hierarchy, Drilled
Almost a third of the NEET questions from this chapter are the hierarchy in some disguise.
Recite it in both directions until neither costs you a thought.
- Ascending: Species - Genus - Family - Order - Class - Phylum (Division) - Kingdom
- Descending: Kingdom - Phylum (Division) - Class - Order - Family - Genus - Species

The 10-second elimination ladder for a sequence question
- Find species. In an ascending list it must be first; in a descending list it must be last. Any option that breaks that is gone, usually two of the four.
- Check the genus-family joint. Genus comes immediately after species going up. A great many wrong options put family there.
- Check the top. Kingdom is the end of an ascending list. Phylum or division sits just below it.

Two facts hidden in the table that get asked directly. Mango and wheat share only the division, Angiospermae, and the kingdom - they part company at class. Man and the housefly share only the kingdom, Animalia.
[NEET Important] The other family set to have ready is Solanaceae - Solanum, Petunia and Datura - and the genus set Felidae - Panthera and Felis, with Panthera leo, Panthera tigris, Panthera pardus and Felis catus.
Correct-Form Spotting, as a Checklist
The "which name is written correctly" question appears constantly, and it is decided by four features. Run them in order and an option dies the moment one fails.
- Two words, the generic name first and the specific epithet second.
- Generic name begins with a capital letter; the specific epithet begins with a small letter.
- Both words in italics when printed, and underlined separately when handwritten.
- The author's name comes after the specific epithet, in abbreviated form and not italicised - as in Mangifera indica Linn.
The six ways a name is made wrong
These are the distractors, and knowing them by shape is faster than reasoning about each option.

Worked at speed. Given Mangifera Indica and Mangifera indica: the first fails rule 2, because the specific epithet must begin with a small letter. The second is correct. That is a 10-second question, and it is one of the chapter-end exercises as well.
The Confusable Pairs, and the Distractors Built From Them
Every wrong option in this chapter is built from one of these. Learn the pairs and you are reading the options rather than puzzling over them.

The four distractor patterns
- The inverted definition. "A genus is an aggregate of families." Read the direction of every "aggregate of" before you accept it.
- The swapped code. ICBN given to animals. Check the letter, not the memory of the sentence.
- The plausible number. 1.5 million or 2 million in place of 1.7 - 1.8 million. This chapter's figure is 1.7 - 1.8 million; the 1.5 million figure belongs to a different chapter.
- The half-true trend. "As you go higher in the hierarchy, the number of common characters increases." It decreases. Read the direction word before the noun.
[NEET Important] When two options both look right, the difference is almost always one word of direction - up against down, increases against decreases, aggregate of species against aggregate of genera. Go straight to that word rather than rereading the whole option.

Answer. (c). Use the ladder. Species must come first in an ascending list, which kills (b) immediately. Then check that each step goes up and skips nothing out of order - (a) jumps species straight to order, which is allowed as a subset but leaves genus out of place, while (c) reads species, genus, order, phylum, all in the right direction. This is one of the chapter-end exercises.

Q. Identify the correctly written name: Mangifera Indica or Mangifera indica.
Answer. Mangifera indica. The specific epithet must begin with a small letter, so the capital I in the first version is the fault. This is one of the chapter-end exercises.

Question 4
Q. Taxonomy and systematics are often given as options in the same question. Which is broader, and why?
Answer. Systematics. Taxonomy is built on four processes - characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. Systematics takes all of that and adds evolutionary relationships between organisms, so it contains taxonomy rather than sitting inside it. Any option that reverses this is wrong.
Question 5
Q. As you move from species to kingdom, what happens to the number of common characters and to the difficulty of determining relationships?
Answer. The number of common characters decreases and the difficulty of determining the relationship to other taxa at the same level increases. Both move in the direction that makes the group larger and less similar, which is the way to check yourself if you blank on it.
Question 6
Q. Panthera leo, Panthera tigris, Panthera pardus and Felis catus are given. Which rank do all four share, and which do the first three share that the fourth does not?
Answer. All four share the family Felidae. The first three also share the genus Panthera; Felis catus sits in a different genus.
Question 7
Q. Which two of man, housefly, mango and wheat are the most distantly related?
Answer. Man and the housefly are not - they share the kingdom Animalia. Mango and wheat share the division Angiospermae and the kingdom Plantae. So the most distant pairings are any animal with any plant, which share nothing above the level of the living world itself - man and mango, man and wheat, housefly and mango, housefly and wheat.
Question 8
Q. An option reads: "A genus is an aggregate of families with more characters in common." Accept or reject, and say why.
Answer. Reject. The direction is inverted. A genus is an aggregate of species; a family is an aggregate of genera. This is the commonest distractor shape in the chapter, and the fix is to read the phrase after "aggregate of" before anything else.

Question 11
Q. Two organisms belong to the same order but different families. A second pair belongs to the same family but different genera. Which pair is more closely related?
Answer. The second pair. Family is lower in the hierarchy than order, and the lower the rank two organisms share, the more characters they have in common. Anything sharing a family already shares the order above it as well.
Question 12
Q. An assertion reads: "The number of common characters decreases as we go higher from species to kingdom." A reason reads: "Higher categories are aggregates of lower ones and so are more inclusive." Are both true, and does the reason explain the assertion?
Answer. Both are true, and the reason does explain the assertion. Each step up gathers more members into the group, and a larger, more mixed group can only be held together by fewer shared characters. That is exactly why the difficulty of determining relationships rises with rank.
