NEET 2027 · Botany · Chapter 14
Molecular Basis of Inheritance
The molecular story of the gene - consistently the single highest-yielding chapter in the NEET Biology paper (often 5-8 questions/year across Botany and Zoology). It covers the structure of DNA and RNA (nucleotides, the Watson-Crick double helix, Chargaff's rules and the packaging of DNA into nucleosomes and chromatin); the search for the genetic material (Griffith's transforming principle, Avery-MacLeod-McCarty and the Hershey-Chase experiment) and the properties that make DNA the genetic material; DNA replication (the semiconservative Meselson-Stahl experiment and the replication machinery); transcription (the transcription unit, RNA polymerases and RNA processing); the genetic code and translation (tRNA the adaptor, the ribosome, charging and the steps of protein synthesis); the regulation of gene expression through the lac operon; and the Human Genome Project and DNA fingerprinting. Six graded practice sets - two Easy, two Medium, one Hard and one NEET previous-year set - each opening with comprehensive NCERT-anchored notes covering 100% of the current syllabus, followed by single-correct MCQs with full explanations.
