Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
The single highest-yield chapter of Class-12 Botany (typically 3-5 NEET questions/year), covering the flower as the site of sexual reproduction and the whole sequence of pre-fertilisation, fertilisation and post-fertilisation events. It covers the stamen, microsporangium and pollen grain (anther structure, microsporogenesis and the male gametophyte); the pistil, megasporangium (ovule) and the embryo sac (megasporogenesis and the 7-celled, 8-nucleate Polygonum-type female gametophyte); pollination (autogamy, geitonogamy and xenogamy; wind, water and animal agents; outbreeding devices; pollen-pistil interaction and artificial hybridisation); double fertilisation (syngamy and triple fusion); and the post-fertilisation events - endosperm and embryo development, seed and fruit formation, and apomixis and polyembryony.
