How this Chapter is Tested in NEET

Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants is one of the highest-scoring chapters of the whole syllabus - NEET usually sets three to five questions from it every year, and they are largely fact-based, so they are very much within reach.

The recurring favourites are:

  • Ploidy of structures (n / 2n / 3n) - the single most repeated theme; know the zygote (2n), endosperm (3n), synergid/egg/antipodal (n), nucellus/perisperm (2n).
  • The embryo sac - '8-nucleate, 7-celled', the egg apparatus, and the number of meiotic and mitotic divisions.
  • Anther and pollen - wall layers, the tapetum, sporopollenin, and microsporogenesis.
  • Pollination - autogamy vs geitonogamy vs xenogamy, cleistogamy, wind vs water pollination, and special examples (Vallisneria, Zostera, Yucca-moth, Ophrys sexual deceit).
  • Double fertilisation - syngamy and triple fusion, and the fate of the two male gametes.
  • Post-fertilisation - endosperm types, perisperm, aleurone layer, false fruit (apple), parthenocarpy (banana), apomixis and polyembryony.
