Breathing vs Cellular Respiration

  • Breathing (Ventilation): A physical process of taking in air (O₂) and giving out air (CO₂). It happens in respiratory organs (lungs, gills, skin etc.).
  • Cellular Respiration: A biochemical process inside cells where food (mainly glucose/fats) is oxidised to release energy (ATP).

Why breathing is needed?

Breathing supplies O₂ for aerobic respiration and removes CO₂ produced in cells.


Respiratory Organs in Animals

Different animals evolved different organs mainly based on habitat (water/land) and body complexity.

1. General Body Surface (Diffusion)

  • Seen in: Sponges, coelenterates, flatworms; also unicellular like Amoeba
  • Why possible? Small size / thin body → high surface area : volume ratio
  • Key point: No special organ needed.

2. Moist Skin (Cutaneous Respiration)

  • Seen in: Earthworm, frog (also uses lungs)
  • Condition: Skin must remain moist and is rich in blood vessels
  • Key point: Dry skin = gas exchange reduces.

3. Tracheal System

  • Seen in: Insects (cockroach)
  • How it works: Air enters through spiracles → tracheae → tracheoles → tissues
  • Most important NCERT point: Blood does NOT carry O₂ in insects.

4. Gills (Branchial Respiration)

  • Seen in: Fishes, prawns, many molluscs; tadpole stage of frog
  • How it works: Water flows over gill filaments → gases diffuse
  • Key point: O₂ in water is less, so aquatic animals often breathe faster.

5. Lungs (Pulmonary Respiration)

  • Seen in: Reptiles, birds, mammals; adult frog
  • Why lungs? Air has more O₂ and diffusion is faster on land.
  • Key point: Lungs provide huge surface area for gas exchange.
