NEET 2027 · Botany · Chapter 18

Organisms and Populations

The opening chapter of the Ecology unit and one of the most reliably scoring chapters in NEET Botany (typically 3-5 questions a year). It covers the organism and its environment (the four levels of ecological organisation, habitat and niche, and why the earth's rotation and axial tilt create biomes); the four major abiotic factors - temperature, water, light and soil - and the eurythermal/stenothermal and euryhaline/stenohaline tolerance categories; the four responses organisms make to abiotic stress (regulate, conform, migrate, suspend - including hibernation, aestivation and diapause); adaptations, from the kangaroo rat's internal fat oxidation and concentrated urine to Allen's Rule, seal blubber, CAM and Opuntia's phylloclades, and the body's three compensations for altitude sickness; populations - density and its practical measures, natality, mortality, sex ratio, the three age pyramids and the growth equation N(t+1) = Nt + [(B + I) - (D + E)]; the two growth models - exponential dN/dt = rN with Nt = N0 e^(rt), and the Verhulst-Pearl logistic dN/dt = rN[(K - N)/K] with its carrying capacity K; life-history variation; and the six population interactions - mutualism, competition, predation, parasitism, commensalism and amensalism - with Gause's competitive exclusion principle, Connell's barnacles, competitive release, MacArthur's resource partitioning, prey and plant defences, brood parasitism, and the fig-wasp and Ophrys mutualisms. Six graded practice sets - two Easy, two Medium, one Hard and one NEET previous-year set - each opening with comprehensive NCERT-anchored notes.
