Chapter Summary

This section is a concise recap of all of Chapter 4 — Agriculture. Use it for last-minute revision before the Board examination.

Agriculture is India's most important primary activity, supporting about two-thirds of the population. Farming types are primitive subsistence (slash-and-burn / jhumming), intensive subsistence (small plots, heavy labour), commercial (market-oriented, modern inputs) and plantation (single crop, large area — tea, coffee, rubber).

Cropping Seasons and Food Crops

  • Seasons: Rabi (winter-sown Oct-Dec: wheat, gram, mustard) · Kharif (monsoon-sown: rice, maize, cotton, jute, bajra) · Zaid (short summer: watermelon, cucumber).
  • Rice — staple, kharif, >25°C, >100 cm rain; 2nd after China. Wheat — rabi, cool season, 50-75 cm; Ganga-Satluj + Deccan.
  • Millets — jowar (3rd food crop), bajra (sandy soil), ragi (iron/calcium-rich). Maize — food+fodder, 21-27°C. Pulses — India largest producer & consumer; leguminous, fix nitrogen (except arhar).

Cash, Fibre and Non-Food Crops

  • Sugarcane — 21-27°C, 75-100 cm; 2nd after Brazil; sugar/gur/molasses. Oilseeds — ~12% of cropped area; groundnut (kharif, Gujarat) ~half.
  • Tea — plantation beverage, humus-rich soil, warm moist frost-free; 2nd after China. Coffee — Arabica (from Yemen), Nilgiris.
  • Rubber — equatorial, >200 cm rain, >25°C; Kerala, TN. Cotton — black soil Deccan, 210 frost-free days, kharif; 2nd after China. Jute — 'golden fibre', flood-plain soil, West Bengal. Sericulture = silkworm rearing.

Reforms and Globalisation

  • Green Revolution (HYV/package tech → food grains) · White Revolution / Operation Flood (milk). Land reforms (weak implementation).
  • Institutional support: crop insurance, Grameen banks, cooperatives, KCC, PAIS, weather bulletins, MSP.
  • Bhoodan-Gramdan (Vinoba Bhave; Pochampally; Blood-less Revolution).
  • Globalisation: competition from subsidised developed-country agriculture; way forward = gene revolution, organic farming, fair prices, food security.

Quick Revision — Must-Know Facts

  • Two-thirds of India depends on agriculture. Farming types: primitive subsistence, intensive subsistence, commercial, plantation.
  • Rabi = winter (wheat, gram); Kharif = monsoon (rice, cotton); Zaid = short summer (watermelon).
  • Rice 2nd after China; sugarcane 2nd after Brazil; cotton & tea 2nd after China.
  • Jute = golden fibre (West Bengal); groundnut = Gujarat; coffee = Nilgiris (Arabica from Yemen).
  • Green Revolution = food grains; White Revolution = milk; Bhoodan-Gramdan = Vinoba Bhave.

Quick Revision — Commonly Confused Points

  • Rice (kharif, hot, wet) vs Wheat (rabi, cool, moderate rain).
  • Cotton (drier black soil, Deccan) vs Jute (wet flood-plain soil, Bengal).
  • Green Revolution (crops) vs White Revolution (milk) vs Gene revolution (genetic engineering).
  • Bhoodan (land gift) vs Gramdan (village gift).
  • Commercial vs subsistence depends on region (rice: commercial in Punjab, subsistence in Odisha).
