How This Chapter Is Asked in NEET

Morphology is a term-and-example chapter, and NEET treats it that way. There is nothing to work out; the question is only ever whether your recall is precise enough to survive a distractor.

The traps repeat:

  • Neighbouring terms swapped. Twisted against imbricate; axile against free central; coleoptile against coleorhiza; prop against stilt roots.
  • The example moved to the wrong term. Alstonia put under opposite phyllotaxy, canna under zygomorphic, coconut given a fleshy mesocarp.
  • An arrangement word used for the wrong organ. Phyllotaxy, venation, inflorescence, aestivation and placentation all mean "arrangement" - of leaves, veins, flowers, perianth members and ovules respectively.
  • Half a definition. "Simple leaf - incisions do not reach the midrib" is right; "simple leaf - not incised" is wrong, because a simple leaf may be deeply incised.

Before You Start

Give yourself 40 minutes for 40 questions and look nothing up. Mark every question where you were choosing between two options rather than certain.

The facts most likely to decide your score:

The five arrangements. Phyllotaxy - leaves on the stem. Venation - veins in the lamina. Inflorescence - flowers on the floral axis. Aestivation - sepals or petals in the bud. Placentation - ovules in the ovary.

The three ovary positions. Hypogynous - superior; perigynous - half inferior; epigynous - inferior.

The four aestivations. Valvate - touch, no overlap. Twisted - overlap in one direction. Imbricate - overlap in no direction. Vexillary - standard, wings, keel.

The five placentations. Marginal - suture ridge, two rows. Axile - septa present, multilocular. Parietal - inner wall, false septum. Free central - septa absent. Basal - one ovule.

The seed pair. Coleoptile - plumule; coleorhiza - radicle; scutellum - the one shield-shaped cotyledon; aleurone layer - proteinous, separating the embryo.
