Class 12 · Physics · Chapter 5
Magnetism and Matter
In Chapter 4 we saw that moving charges create magnetic fields; now we study magnetism as a subject in its own right — a compact, high-scoring chapter worth a steady 3-5 Board marks and a regular question in JEE/NEET. We start from the everyday facts about magnets (the north-south directive property, attraction and repulsion, the impossibility of isolating a pole) and the magnetic field lines of a bar magnet. We then establish the chapter's central idea: a bar magnet is an equivalent solenoid, with magnetic moment , whose far-axial field matches a magnetic dipole. A dipole placed in a uniform field feels a torque and stores potential energy , and a powerful electrostatic analog (, , ) lets us import every electric-dipole result directly into magnetism. Gauss's law for magnetism — net magnetic flux through any closed surface is always zero — encodes the non-existence of magnetic monopoles. Finally we quantify how matter responds to magnetic fields through magnetisation , magnetic intensity , the master relation , susceptibility and relative permeability , and classify all materials as diamagnetic, paramagnetic or ferromagnetic — including the perfect diamagnetism () of superconductors. Every formula, comparison table and exam-favourite distinction is covered.
