Class 10 (English Medium) · Democratic Politics-II · Chapter 3
Gender, Religion and Caste
The third chapter of Class 10 Political Science (Democratic Politics-II) studies how three major social differences - gender, religion and caste - express themselves in Indian politics, and asks whether such expression is healthy or harmful for democracy. It begins with the gender division, explaining that it rests on social stereotypes rather than biology, the sexual division of labour, the public/private divide and patriarchy. It traces the feminist movement, the many ways Indian women face discrimination in literacy, wages, the child sex ratio and safety, and the low level of women's political representation, along with reservation in local bodies and the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023. It then turns to religion and communalism, distinguishing the legitimate relationship between religion and politics from communal politics and its forms, and setting out the constitutional provisions that make India a secular state. Finally it examines caste - special to India - its continuing inequalities, and the two-way link between caste and politics, stressing that caste alone does not determine election results. A high-scoring and conceptually rich chapter of the Board syllabus.
