How This Chapter Is Asked in NEET

Anatomy is short, dense and highly predictable. Every question is one of three shapes: name the layer, which section is this, or which of these is not a feature of X. Nothing has to be worked out.

The traps repeat:

  • Adjacent layers swapped. Endodermis against pericycle; epiblema against epidermis; hypodermis against cortex.
  • The two hypodermes. Collenchymatous in a dicot stem, sclerenchymatous in a monocot stem. This one distractor appears constantly.
  • Open and closed used loosely. Open means cambium present, not "bundle exposed"; radial and conjoint are a separate axis from open and closed.
  • Endarch and exarch reversed. Endarch in stems, exarch in roots.
  • A feature given to the wrong section. Bulliform cells belong to the isobilateral leaf, casparian strips to the root endodermis, semi-lunar sclerenchyma to the dicot stem pericycle.

Three tissue systems - epidermal, ground, vascular, classified by structure and location.

Epidermis - usually single-layered, parenchymatous, cuticle absent in roots. Stomatal apparatus = aperture + guard cells + subsidiary cells. Guard cells bean-shaped, dumb-bell in grasses, outer wall thin, inner wall thickened, chloroplasts present. Root hairs unicellular, absorb; trichomes multicellular, prevent water loss.

Bundle labels, two independent axes - radial (roots) against conjoint (stems, leaves); open (cambium present, dicot stem) against closed (no cambium, monocot).

Root - epiblema, cortex, endodermis with casparian strips of suberin, pericycle (lateral roots, vascular cambium), xylem patches, conjunctive tissue, pith, stele. Dicot two to four patches, small pith, secondary growth; monocot polyarch, large pith, no secondary growth.

Stem - dicot: collenchymatous hypodermis, starch sheath endodermis, semi-lunar sclerenchyma pericycle, medullary rays, bundles in a ring, conjoint open endarch. Monocot: sclerenchymatous hypodermis, scattered bundles with sclerenchymatous sheaths, closed, no phloem parenchyma, water-containing cavities.

Leaf - dorsiventral: more stomata abaxial, palisade above, spongy below, bundle sheath. Isobilateral: stomata both surfaces, mesophyll undifferentiated, bulliform cells.
