Board & NEET Exam Strategy
For the Board exam
- Diagrams win marks. Practise labelled diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems, a seminiferous tubule (TS), the Graafian follicle, and the blastocyst — these are the chapter's staple 3-5 mark questions.
- Use NCERT phrasing. "Ampullary-isthmic junction", "foetal ejection reflex", "spermiation" — marking schemes reward the exact NCERT keywords used in this chapter's notes and capsule.
- Hormone questions are sequencing questions. GnRH to LH/FSH to gonads; the mid-cycle LH surge; oxytocin's positive feedback in parturition — write them as cause-and-effect chains.
For NEET
- Numbers are the traps. A couple of million oogonia per fetal ovary; 60,000-80,000 primary follicles per ovary at puberty; 200-300 million sperms per ejaculate with the 60% shape / 40% motility criteria; morula at 8-16 blastomeres; menstrual cycle of 28/29 days. NEET keys strictly to these NCERT values.
- Know the two arrests of oogenesis (prophase-I before birth; metaphase-II until sperm entry) and that meiosis-I completes at the tertiary follicle stage.
- Source-match every hormone: hCG/hPL from the placenta, relaxin from the ovary in late pregnancy — and remember hCG, hPL and relaxin occur only during pregnancy.
- Pace: about a minute per question; bank time on recall items for the sequencing ones.
