How This Chapter Is Asked in NEET
Animal Kingdom is one of the highest-yielding chapters in the Diversity unit, and the questions are built almost entirely from three raw materials: a signature structure, a named example, and an exact character such as the number of heart chambers or the type of body cavity. There is nothing to calculate. What is tested is whether your recall is precise enough to survive a distractor.
The traps repeat, year after year:
- Adjacent phyla swapped. Flame cells against nephridia against malpighian tubules; comb plates against cnidoblasts; open against closed circulation.
- The exception hidden in the stem. Crocodiles among reptiles; Ornithorhynchus among mammals; the ostrich among birds; Ichthyophis among amphibians.
- A word changed by one degree. "Mostly marine" where the book says exclusively marine; "usually" where the book says all.
- Two-part answers cut in half. Echinoderm symmetry needs both larval bilateral and adult radial; the reptilian heart needs both three-chambered and four-chambered in crocodiles.
These are exam-pattern practice questions built on the chapter's recurring core facts. They are not authenticated year-tagged previous-year papers.
Before You Start
Give yourself 40 minutes for 40 questions and do not look anything up while you work. Mark every question where you were choosing between two options rather than certain - that mark is more useful than the score.
The facts most likely to decide your marks here:
Signature structures. Choanocytes and spongocoel - Porifera. Cnidoblasts and nematocysts - Coelenterata. Eight rows of comb plates - Ctenophora. Flame cells - Platyhelminthes. Complete gut with muscular pharynx - Aschelminthes. Nephridia, parapodia, double ventral nerve cord - Annelida. Malpighian tubules, chitinous exoskeleton, jointed appendages - Arthropoda. Radula, mantle cavity, calcareous shell - Mollusca. Water vascular system, calcareous ossicles - Echinodermata. Stomochord, proboscis gland - Hemichordata.
Body cavity. Acoelomate - Platyhelminthes. Pseudocoelomate - Aschelminthes. Coelomate - Annelida onwards.
Heart chambers. Two - fishes. Three - amphibians and most reptiles. Four - crocodiles, birds, mammals.
Circulation. Open - Arthropoda, Hemichordata. Closed - Annelida, Chordata.
