Same Syllabus. A Different Exam.
The Important Questions and Answers section worked this chapter the way a textbook does - define, describe, compare. NEET does not ask you to describe anything. It hands you one line, four options and about half a minute, and it wants the right one.
So this section covers the same syllabus with a different question in mind: not "can you write this out?" but "can you recognise it instantly and eliminate the other three?"
The marking is what forces the change. A correct answer is +4 and a wrong one is -1, so a guess you are not sure of costs you a mark and, worse, costs you the time you spent on it. Animal Kingdom is one of the highest-yielding chapters in the whole paper - it is pure recall, it is set every single year, and it is usually set more than once. The only way to waste it is to let one of its questions run long.
Key Point: Nothing in this chapter has to be worked out. Every question is a lookup - a cell of the comparison table, a signature structure, a named genus, or an exception. If you find yourself reasoning, you are already over budget.

The four shapes, and what each should cost you

What this section repeats, and what it does not
It does not re-explain the chapter. It gives you the phylum comparison table as a grid you can read down a column as well as across a row, the signature structures as one-to-one pairs, the excretory and respiratory chains in order, the named examples with the one fact attached to each, the vertebrate classes as a recognition grid, and the exceptions every hard question is built on - and then drills them at speed.

Most students learn this table one phylum at a time, reading across a row. NEET builds its questions out of single cells, and the fastest way to reach a single cell is to know what the whole column looks like. So learn it both ways.

[NEET Important] The three highest-value single cells in the whole table are Mollusca - segmentation absent, Annelida - respiratory system absent, and Echinodermata - radial adult but bilateral larva. Each of them looks wrong at a glance, which is exactly why they are set.

This is the highest-return page in the chapter. Learn it as pairs, and in both directions - given the structure, name the phylum; given the phylum, name the structure.

The excretory chain, in order
Say it as one string. The questions come out of the middle of it.
Platyhelminthes - flame cells. Aschelminthes - an excretory tube opening at the excretory pore. Annelida - nephridia. Arthropoda - malpighian tubules. Mollusca - the gills in the mantle cavity, which are respiratory and excretory. Echinodermata - none at all. Hemichordata - the proboscis gland. Vertebrata - kidneys.

The respiratory chain, in order
Porifera - the water current through the canal system, no organ. Coelenterata, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes and Annelida - the body surface, with no respiratory system listed. Arthropoda - gills, book gills, book lungs or a tracheal system. Mollusca - feather-like gills in the mantle cavity. Echinodermata - the water vascular system. Hemichordata - gills. Amphibia - gills, lungs and skin. Reptilia - lungs. Aves - lungs supplemented by air sacs. Mammalia - lungs.
[NEET Important] Arthropoda is the only group with four respiratory options - gills, book gills, book lungs and a tracheal system. If an option lists all four, it is Arthropoda; if the words tracheal system appear anywhere, it is Arthropoda. And Amphibia is the only class that breathes three ways - gills, lungs and skin.
The Named Examples, With the One Fact Attached to Each
NEET does not ask you to describe Limulus. It asks what Limulus is. So each name needs exactly one fact hanging off it, and no more than one.

[NEET Important] Five names are asked by their label rather than by their common name: Limulus the living fossil (king crab), Locusta the gregarious pest (locust), Torpedo the electric organ, Trygon the poison sting (sting ray), and Laccifer the lac insect. They appear far more often than their one line in the book would suggest.
The Vertebrate Classes as a Recognition Grid, and the Exceptions Examiners Live On
Read down the body covering column and the heart column before anything else. Those two settle most of the class-level questions on their own.

The divisions above the classes, which are asked as a separate question. Vertebrata splits into Agnatha, which lacks a jaw, and Gnathostomata, which bears one. Gnathostomata splits into the superclasses Pisces, which bear fins, and Tetrapoda, which bear limbs. Cyclostomata is the only class under Agnatha. Pisces holds Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes; Tetrapoda holds Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia.
The exceptions, which is where the hard questions are decided

The characters that must never be answered in one word
If a fuller option is on the paper, an option giving you only one half of these is wrong, however true that half is.

[NEET Important] When two options both look right, the difference is nearly always an exception one of them has left out. Read for the missing crocodile, the missing platypus and the missing larva before you read anything else.

Each item names the shortcut it uses, because the shortcut is the point.
Question 1
Q. Segmentation is present in which of these: Mollusca, Echinodermata, Annelida, Ctenophora?
Answer. Annelida. Read the segmentation column, not the animal. Only three groups have segmentation present - Annelida, Arthropoda and Chordata. Mollusca is the distractor here because it sits between two segmented phyla in the table, and students remember its position instead of its cell.
Question 2
Q. Match each excretory structure to its phylum: flame cells, nephridia, malpighian tubules, proboscis gland.
Answer.

The shortcut is the chain in order - flame cells, excretory pore, nephridia, malpighian tubules, gills, none, proboscis gland. Recite it and the matching is done before you finish reading the options.
Question 3
Q. Which phylum has a complete digestive system but no circulatory system?
Answer. Aschelminthes. Two columns decide it. The complete gut starts at Aschelminthes; the circulatory system starts one phylum later, at Annelida. Only Aschelminthes sits in that one-phylum gap.
Question 4
Q. Annelids have a closed circulatory system. What does the comparison table say about their respiratory system?
Answer. Absent. The respiratory column stays absent right up to and including Annelida and turns present only at Arthropoda. So Annelida is the one phylum that has circulation without a respiratory system, and that off-set by one row is set as a question on its own.
Question 5
Q. Give the one label carried by each of Limulus, Locusta, Torpedo and Trygon.
Answer. Limulus - the king crab, a living fossil. Locusta - the gregarious pest. Torpedo - has an electric organ. Trygon - the sting ray, with a poison sting. For all four the label, not the common name, is the whole question.
Question 6
Q. An option reads "Echinoderms are radially symmetrical." Accept or reject.
Answer. Reject it if a fuller option is available. The larvae are bilaterally symmetrical and the adults are radially symmetrical. A bare "radial" ignores the larva. This is one of the two-part characters, and the shortcut is to check whether any option carries both halves before you settle for one.
Question 7
Q. Which of these is INCORRECT? (a) Reptiles have a three-chambered heart (b) All mammals are viviparous (c) Birds have a completely four-chambered heart (d) Amphibians have external fertilisation.
Answer. (b). Hunt the exception first. Mammals are viviparous with few exceptions, and Ornithorhynchus, the platypus, is oviparous, so the word all breaks the statement. Note that (a) survives because it does not say "in all reptiles" - crocodiles are the exception there, and an option that said "all reptiles" would fall too.

Four names, four exceptions. Learning this block alone answers a whole family of statement-based questions.
A Drill Before You Move On
Decide each one before you read the verdict. Aim for 20 seconds each.
Question 9
Q. Name the only pseudocoelomate phylum and the only phylum with no excretory system.
Answer. Aschelminthes is the only pseudocoelomate - the mesoderm lies as scattered pouches and does not line the cavity. Echinodermata is the one with no excretory system at all. Both are single-cell lookups, and both are set constantly because they are the odd value in their column.
Question 10
Q. Name the phylum for each in fifteen seconds: comb plates, choanocytes, radula, water vascular system, cnidoblasts, stomochord.
Answer. Comb plates - Ctenophora. Choanocytes - Porifera. Radula - Mollusca. Water vascular system - Echinodermata. Cnidoblasts - Coelenterata. Stomochord - Hemichordata. One structure, one phylum, no reasoning. If a pair does not come in about two seconds, it is not learnt yet.
Question 11
Q. Assertion: Hemichordata is placed under non-chordata. Reason: the stomochord in its collar region is not a true notochord. Are both true, and does the reason explain the assertion?
Answer. Both are true, and the reason does explain the assertion. Hemichordates were earlier taken as a subphylum of Chordata because that collar structure looked like a notochord. It is not one, so the group was moved out and now stands as a separate phylum under non-chordata. This is the standard assertion-reason item from the chapter, and both halves are quoted almost word for word.
Question 12
Q. Three cells separate Chondrichthyes from Osteichthyes. Which three, and what does each say?
Answer.

Add placoid scales against cycloid or ctenoid scales and you have every version of this question covered. Both classes have a two-chambered heart, so heart chambers never separate them.
Question 13
Q. Give the class of each: Petromyzon, Trygon, Hyla, Naja, Neophron, Pteropus.
Answer. Petromyzon - Cyclostomata. Trygon - Chondrichthyes. Hyla - Amphibia. Naja - Reptilia. Neophron - Aves. Pteropus - Mammalia. Six names, six classes, and the whole item should take under thirty seconds. If a name is missing from memory, leave the question rather than guessing at -1.
