How to use this set

Thirty questions, NEET pattern, four options each, one right answer each. Five are assertion-reason items and two are match-the-column items; the rest are single-statement multiple choice.

Marking. A correct answer earns +4+4. An incorrect answer costs 1-1. A question left blank scores nothing. Thirty questions therefore carry a maximum of 30×4=12030 \times 4 = 120 marks, and a student who gets 24 right and 6 wrong scores 24×46=9024 \times 4 - 6 = 90.

Whether to guess. With four options untouched, a blind guess averages 14(+4)+34(1)=+0.25\frac{1}{4}(+4) + \frac{3}{4}(-1) = +0.25 marks — almost nothing. Rule one option out and the average rises to 13(+4)+23(1)=+0.67\frac{1}{3}(+4) + \frac{2}{3}(-1) = +0.67; rule two out and it is 12(+4)+12(1)=+1.5\frac{1}{2}(+4) + \frac{1}{2}(-1) = +1.5. So answer every item where you have eliminated something, and leave the ones where you have eliminated nothing.

Time. Give the set 35 minutes — 30 minutes at about a minute a question, then 5 minutes on the items you flagged. Anything that has already eaten ninety seconds should be marked and abandoned; a match-the-column item on functional groups deserves fifteen seconds, not a hundred.

What is tested. The weighting follows the paper: nomenclature and functional group recognition come first and account for seven items here, isomerism identification for five, chirality and cis-trans for four, the stability orders and electronic effects for five as one-line reasoning items, reaction types and their intermediates for three, the laboratory tests and purification methods for four, and single-step analysis arithmetic for two. Nothing in the set needs a mechanism drawn or a multi-stage calculation; every item is a piece of recall plus at most one short inference.

What is allowed. Pen, paper and your own head. No calculator, and no log tables, data booklet or formula sheet of any kind. The two numerical items are single substitutions into a formula, with arithmetic small enough to finish in the margin. Carry these atomic masses: H 1, C 12, N 14, O 16, S 32, Cl 35.5, Br 80, I 127.

Key Point: Work the assertion-reason items in three separate moves — judge the assertion alone, judge the reason alone, and only then ask whether the reason causes the assertion. Two true statements side by side are not automatically a cause and an effect.

[NEET] Mark your answer the moment you have it. The commonest avoidable loss on a paper like this is not a wrong option; it is a right answer worked out and then never transferred.
